Cornerstone Capsule Celebration
Opening the 1892 Cornerstone Capsule
On July 4, 1892, a carefully prepared capsule was placed inside the cornerstone on the southwest side of the courthouse. Tucked away for more than a century, it is believed to contain items chosen to reflect our community at that time. Recently uncovered during restoration work on the courthouse, this long-hidden capsule gives us a rare chance to connect with the people who came before us. We hope you’ll join us as we uncover our past and celebrate Franklin County's story.
When:
Thursday, December 4, 2025, 3 to 6 p.m.
Where:
Franklin County Courthouse, 315 S. Main Street, Ottawa, KS
Inside the Celebration:
Join us as we take a step back in time! The 1892 time capsule will be opened shortly after 3 p.m. We’ll see what was placed inside more than 130 years ago, then add a brand-new capsule to be opened 100 years from now. After the ceremony, everyone is invited to view the items, enjoy refreshments, and share in the celebration.
